To be “saved” means to be saved from our sins and the consequence of sin, which is eternal death. We all have sinned (Romans 3:23) and these sins separate us from a holy God. But because God loved us, He sent Jesus His son to die on the cross for us as a payment for our sins (John 3:16). If we believe in Him, that He is the son of God and that He died and rose again, and confess Him with our mouths as Lord of our lives, accepting Him to come into our hearts, we are saved (Romans 10:9).
Salvation (being saved) is a free gift from God through faith. The difference between being saved and not being saved is the difference between spending eternity with the Lord Jesus in heaven and eternity apart from Him in hell.
